A sound experience through bone conduction
Did you know that your body can transmit and amplify sounds without using Bluetooth, WiFi, or electronic equipment? This fascinating phenomenon is called osteophony, or bone conduction.

How does it work?
At the Cité de l’Océan, this unique activity invites you to test this one-of-a-kind experience by trying to recognize marine animal sounds using your own body.
How to:
- Place your elbows on the round pads.
- Bring your wrists to your ears.
- Listen carefully and try to recognize the marine animal sounds.
- Compare your score with your friends and family!
Tip: Close your eyes for even more sensations!

Osteophony: another way to hear
Usually, sound travels through the air: it enters the ear, passes through the eardrum, and is amplified by the ossicles before reaching the inner ear. But with bone conduction, the bones of the skull themselves become conductors of vibrations, bypassing the ear canal.
This phenomenon is used in some modern technologies, such as bone conduction headphones, allowing you to listen to music while remaining aware of surrounding sounds.
