Two doctors, one shared passion for the ocean
Romain Barats, a radiologist, and Cécile Gabillon Barats, an occupational health specialist, share much more than their medical careers: they share a profound passion for diving and the marine world. In 2015, during a trip to Tahiti, their lives took a decisive turn. An unexpected encounter with a humpback whale acted as a true catalyst. Faced with the power and vulnerability of this iconic animal, their vision of the ocean was deeply transformed.
The Wildlife Odyssey: Exploring, documenting, raising awareness
Since this awakening, the couple has traveled the globe to document the richness of the oceans: from Costa Rica to Polynesia, and down to the icy waters of Antarctica. Through The Wildlife Odyssey, they organize small-group expeditions (2 to 6 participants), designed as genuine scientific and human immersions:
Exploration of marine ecosystems.
Observation of wildlife in its natural habitat.
Underwater photography workshops.
Participation in awareness-building and contributions to research.
Each expedition is conducted with the utmost respect for the ecosystems being observed.
Photography as a language
For Cécile and Romain, an image is far more than just a snapshot. It is a tool for dialogue between humans and animals, a “suspended moment,” a silent encounter. Every photograph tells a story, translating their wonder at marine life and the urgent need to preserve it. Today, alongside their work as healthcare providers, they collaborate as professional photographers and videographers for major international magazines and documentaries.
Their talent was officially recognized in 2025: their photograph titled “Acceptance” won an award at the prestigious Ocean Photographer of the Year competition, a distinction that honors the strength of their commitment to marine biodiversity.
An exhibition at the Cité de l’Océan
The exhibition presented at the Cité de l’Océan brings together 19 exceptional underwater photographs from several years of global expeditions. The Wildlife Odyssey stands as an invitation to wonder, but also to awareness: the realization that this living world must be protected.
